Case Study. Russian-Speaking Legal Counsel – Global Tech, UK

Client

The hiring organisation was a rapidly growing yet well-established multinational technology business headquartered in the US with Fortune 2000 customer base.

Role

EMEAR Head of Legal reached out to us looking to recruit a legal counsel with Russian language and legal expertise to be based in their UK office in Thames Valley.

The role was created due to the business’s success in the growing markets of Russia and Kazakhstan.

The tasks of the role included pricing, drafting and negotiating complex software license and service transactions (often multi-million dollar deals with industry-leading companies involving time-sensitive high-intensity negotiations).

Profile

Apart from the Russian language skills and legal qualification the company was looking for a skilled negotiator with a track record of closing high revenue, high complexity software license and service deals and a background in deal structuring, pricing, and contract drafting, someone who would thrive collaborating with sales executives and sales leadership.

Location

The team chose to have the legal counsel be based in the UK rather than in Russia as they felt this would enable the individual to be truly integrated into the business and into the regional legal team.

Solution

We turned to our network of Russian-speaking legal professionals.

We knew that Russian is a native language to population in several former Soviet Union countries. So we made sure to include into our selection lawyers qualified in not just Russia but also Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

Our database is a live community of legal professionals and we make sure to nourish and communicate with our legal talent base regularly.

We quickly mapped out our Russian speaking lawyers within the commutable distance to Reading and qualified them against client’s requirements.

By the end of the day we had responses seven Russian-speaking lawyers with technology and software licensing experience who could commute to Reading.

After interviewing them for this particular role we narrowed down the shortlist to four individuals and submitted the profiles. The EMEAR Head of Legal commended on the quick turnaround mentioning that we “definitely hit the sweet spot” with our profiles.

Within 2 days of interviews and contract drafting tests the client made an offer to a native native Russian speaker qualified in Estonia (where 66% of the population speak Russian) based in West London.

A month later the new Russian-speaking legal counsel started at company’s premises in Thames Valley working from the office 4 days a week alongside the legal and commercial teams and remoting once a week from home.

Outcome

Within a month both the EMEAR legal team and the commercial team in Russia noticed a significant increase in understanding between the teams of two jurisdictions and much faster turnaround in negotiations and contracts. As well as agreeable and friendly personality of the new team member.
